Espelho é o sistema óptico constituído por uma superfície plana polida, onde a reflexão regular é fenômeno que ocorre com maior intensidade.
Consideramos um ponto luminoso P diante de um espelho plano E.

A luz proveniente desse ponto reflete-se no espelho, obedecendo às leis da reflexão. Um observador O, recebendo a luz refletida, tem a impressão de que essa luz origina-se de um ponto P situado ”dentro do esplho” e que, geometricamente, corresponde ao cruzamento dos prolongamentos dos raios refletidos. Esse ponto P é denominado ponto imagem virtual. O ponto P de onde realmente os raios são provenientes é o onto objeto real.
O ponto objeto O e o ponto imagem P’ são simétricos em relação à superfície do espelho:

Quando o objeto é extenso, a imagem formada, além de ser simétrica ao objeto em relação à superfície do espelho, tem dimensões iguais às do objeto.

Campo Visual de um espelho Plano

Campo visual de um espelho plano, relativo a um observador é a região do espaço que o observador pode ser reflexão no espelho.

Para determinar o campo visual de um espelho plano, relativo a um observador O, pode-se proceder da seguinte maneira:
-Determinar o ponto O’, simétrico de O, em relação ao plano do espelho;
– Traçar retas que passam por O’ e pelas bordas do espelho.

A região definida dessa forma, em frente à superfície refletora, é o campo visual.

Campo visual: Qualquer objeto situado nessa região pode ser visto pelo observador, por reflexão, no espelho.
